Process-one News: ProcessOne launches online marketplace for instant messaging services and applications

PARIS, FRANCE – 27 April 2009 – ProcessOne, an instant messaging (IM) solutions provider with over 35 million registered users in the world, today announced the launch of its online IMstore to meet the growing demand for IM*. The IMstore will enable businesses to directly purchase instant messaging applications and services, which have been created by ProcessOne and independent XMPP developers, allowing them to customise their corporate instant messaging platforms to meet their specific needs.

Initially, users will be able to buy ProcessOne’s OneTeam IM client for the iPhone and corporate IM gateways from the IMstore. OneTeam gives users access to mobile IM services on the iPhone / iPod Touch devices. It is ideally suited for business as it can be used in a corporate environment with an organisation’s own XMPP server, meaning that users can communicate more securely using the public IM accounts they are familiar with. ProcessOne’s IM gateways enable businesses to connect to six of the most popular instant messaging networks – MSN, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, GoogleTalk and Twitter – without users needing to leave their existing corporate instant messaging solution, providing IT departments with greater control. As the IMstore continues to grow further applications will be added including VoIP and video applications.

ProcessOne is looking to create a developer ecosystem with the launch of the store, in order to tap into developers’ innovation and provide them with the opportunity to monetise the IM applications that they develop. By giving developers the opportunity to create their own applications and sell them through the store, ProcessOne aims to further promote the development of open standard instant messaging platforms and applications.

“Instant messaging is continuing to grow and especially as more enterprises are seeing it as a valuable communications tool,” commented Mickael Remond, CEO of ProcessOne. “The IMstore is a unique model for mixing open source and commercial software. By creating a marketplace, developers now have a way to showcase and make money from the IM applications that they develop. This is also very beneficial to businesses as they now have access to a one-stop shop for all their IM needs, which enables them to quickly purchase applications and customise their messaging platforms.”

To visit the ProcessOne IMstore, please go to :
http://www.process-one.net/en/imstore/

Editors’ Notes
* According to the Radcati Group, the number of IM accounts worldwide will grow from 1.8 billion in 2008 to over 3.7 billion by 2012

Process-one News: Lack of education restricts growth of mobile instant messaging

London, UK – 4 February 2009 - Research released today by instant messaging experts, ProcessOne, has revealed that 60% of mobile users would send less text messages if they were better educated about how to use mobile instant messaging (IM) services. Despite many more of today's mobile handsets having IM capability only 35% of the users surveyed currently used mobile IM with text messaging remaining the dominant communications medium.

In the UK on average 6.5 billion text messages are sent per month*, however, the research did reveal that users are becoming increasingly frustrated with what they can do with text messaging. 58% of respondents cited character restrictions as their biggest frustration, followed by lack of real-time communication (22%) and lack of multimedia capability such as video (20%).

“There is a great opportunity for mobile operators to educate their users about the benefits of mobile IM, said Mickaël Rémond, CEO of ProcessOne. “Despite remaining very popular, text messaging hasn’t evolved with users’ communication habits. With today's mobile devices consumers are wanting a much more real-time and interactive experience, in order to better communicate with friends and colleagues.”

In the same way that texting and mobile voice calls only took off when users were able to communicate easily and cost-effectively with each other irrespective of network, the survey revealed that central to the future success of mobile IM will be interoperability. Just over two thirds of respondents stated that they would use mobile IM more if their network operator provided them with a single IM service that would connect with contacts on other networks.

Mobile IM pricing remains an unclear issue for many users, as nearly half of people questioned said that the ‘apparent’ high cost was the biggest barrier towards them using mobile IM services. However, interestingly the majority of users (40%) said that they would prefer to pay for mobile IM on a pay-per-message basis, as opposed to a low-cost monthly subscription (30%) or advertising funded model (30%).

“There definitely needs to be better clarity regards mobile IM pricing. It is apparent that people are willing to use services if they are priced correctly so there is plenty of room for mobile operators to develop innovative pricing options, whether it is a flat-rate fee or micro billing for add-on IM services, such as message histories or file downloads,” concluded Mickaël Rémond.

The research was conducted by independent market research company TNS and was a survey of 2,000 mobile phone users in Great Britain. For further details of the survey, please contact Spark Communications on +44 (0)20 7436 0420.

OneTeam can be downloaded from the Apple App Store on iTunes, giving users access to mobile IM on the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
OneTeam is ideally suited for business users as it can be used in a corporate environment with a businesses’ own XMPP server. For the IT department this means they can much more effectively manage IM, ensuring security and compliance, while at the same time giving users the flexibility of using the public IM accounts they are familiar with.

“The iPhone is fast emerging as the device of choice for many business users, many of whom will require instant messaging capability,” said Mickaël Rémond, CEO of ProcessOne. “Our OneTeam client allows businesses to have the best of both worlds when it comes to IM by allowing users to continue to use public IM clients, but also providing the capability for them to be brought under the control of the IT department so they can be managed and maintained effectively.”

OneTeam enables users to communicate using the software on their iPhone when connected to WiFi, 3G and Edge networks, enabling them to stay connected wherever they are in the world.

Key features of the of the OneTeam service include:

No per-message charges – OneTeam uses a users’ existing data plan

Enables users to access their Gmail® account directly

Clean and streamlined workflow

Compliance with the open XMPP standard

Users can chat with their contacts on other IM networks

“We are committed to making OneTeam an instant messaging application that users will love using, so will be continuing to develop the software and introduce new features. We will be actively soliciting feedback from our users to ensure that they have the functionality they need to communicate via IM to friends, colleagues and business partners in the future,” concluded Mickaël Rémond.

OneTeam is available at the Apple App Store on iTunes and costs €4.99 (£3.49) to download.

London, UK – 10 July 2008 - Research released today by instant messaging experts, ProcessOne, revealed that 72% of UK businesses have banned the use of public instant messaging (IM) software, such as MSN, AIM and Yahoo!, because of security fears. These fears include the ability for employees to download the software without the IT department’s knowledge and potentially use it to send confidential information outside the business. This is despite the fact that 74% of those surveyed say that they think IM could provide valuable collaboration benefits to their organisation; indicating that at the moment, security fears are overriding the opportunity that UK businesses have to increase collaboration and business productivity.

“It is a shame that more businesses in the UK aren’t taking advantage of the benefits that instant messaging can bring,” said Mickaël Rémond, CEO of ProcessOne. “Many organisations are torn between wanting to maximise security or gain collaboration and productivity benefits, and clearly maintaining security is winning at this point. However, businesses need to ask themselves whether taking such a knee-jerk reaction as completely banning the use of IM is really the best option for the company.”

The concern about the security risks of allowing public IM use within the organisation was widespread, with 88% of IT directors saying they were concerned. In fact, over half (56%) said that their organisation was worried about losing sensitive business information through IM conversations. However, despite this, only 12% of those surveyed said that their company kept an audit trail of IM messages sent by employees using free public IM software. Considering the increasing number of regulations which specify that all communication, including instant messages, needs to be kept, this means that 88% of UK businesses are potentially at risk of not complying and will have no way of confirming if confidential information was sent outside the business using public IM.

When questioned further about their organisation’s reaction to the need to keep audit trails of IM conversations in order to comply with regulations, over one third (38%) of IT directors said that their business had banned the use of public IM outright. 21% said that their company is using a private IM system, instead of public IM, so that audit trails can be kept. Some businesses had a more extreme reaction with 15% not allowing any type of instant messaging because they thought it was too difficult to keep reliable IM conversation audit trails. More worrying, however, was that, 8% of IT directors said that their business doesn’t bother to keep track of IM message audit trails at all because they think the process is too complicated, and 10% did not know that audit trails needed to be kept.

The research also found that about half of IT directors thought that staff would be reluctant to use a corporate IM tool instead of using the public IM software that they were used to, leaving them with little choice but to ban IM completely if they were concerned about security.

“Clearly, everyone recognises the benefits that IM can bring. However, the challenge will be for businesses to look for strategies that enable them to reap the rewards without putting themselves at risk of a security breach,” said Mickaël Rémond, CEO of ProcessOne. “While corporate IM tools are changing and becoming more user friendly, the best solution is to find a way to allow employees to use whichever solution they are most comfortable with, while providing a way for businesses to enforce their IT policies to protect the organisation and ensure that audit trails are kept. Only by finding a strategy that allows this level of flexibility can businesses hope to maximise their security, as well as their collaboration and productivity.”

The research was conducted by independent market research company Vanson Bourne and was a survey of 100 senior IT decision-makers from enterprises of 1000 or more employees. For further details of the survey, please contact Spark Communications on (0)207 436 0420

Process-one News: Major League of Baseball teams up with ProcessOne to deploy large scale chat system

The MLB.com site offers a wealth of information and services, including Game Day, a flash-based audio application that enables fans to follow every pitch as it happens.

MLB.com wanted to make its web site as ‘sticky’ as possible so that fans would want to come to the site, get involved and stay for a long period of time. It therefore decided to develop a new instant messaging facility to enhance the features of Game Day. At first, the organisation had some concerns about the project. A previous attempt to develop instant messaging had been unsuccessful because the solution implemented had been neither sufficiently scalable to meet demand nor visually exciting enough. MLB.com therefore knew that the success of the new venture would depend heavily on its choice of platform. The organisation had to find an instant messaging server that would give it both the flexibility to innovate and the confidence to grow.

In the previous year, MLB.com’s Game Day application had attracted over 85 million users. MLB.com knew how many concurrent visitors it attracted to its site on game days and it knew what its average year-on-year growth was. It also knew how many fans had used its earlier instant messaging service. Using these figures as the basis for some solid statistical analysis, it anticipated that demand for its new chat facility would not only be huge – but would also grow steadily over time.

Providing quality support

MLB.com interviewed a lot of potential partners for the project and carried out practical
product evaluations. However, the solutions that it initially tested failed to provide the
flexibility and scalability that it needed. Then, MLB.com met ProcessOne at a conference in
California. “We were immediately impressed by ProcessOne’s offering,” says Joe Choti, CTO of
MLB.com. “ProcessOne was head and shoulders above everyone else.”

ProcessOne provides high performance instant messaging servers that are based on ejabberd, an open source technology that is mainly written in the Erlang programming language. As it runs in a cluster mode, ejabberd is highly robust and can be easily expanded in size, making it ideal for large-scale deployments. MLB.com was familiar with ejabberd and quickly identified that the ProcessOne Instant Messaging Server could meet all of its requirements.

“ejabberd is a full featured jabber server compared to the other products that are in the market,” explains Christian Gough, system administrator at MLB.com. “The ProcessOne Instant Messaging Server offered every feature that we desired. By leveraging the scalability of Erlang, the solution allows us to easily expand and adapt the server whenever we want to in the future.”

The CEO of ProcessOne travelled to New York to work directly with MLB.com’s internal team and specify the precise requirements of the solution. “His help was extremely timely and useful,” says Gough. “The quality of support that we have received from ProcessOne has been very, very good.”

Creating an innovative service

For MLB.com, the visual concept of the solution was just as important as the underlying technology. The organisation wanted to create a Game Day chat facility that would give fans the look and feel of experiencing a live game with other fans. It therefore based its new instant messaging service on a virtual ballpark. Fans can visit different sections of the online ballpark during a game to join different chat sessions on different topics with different groups of people.

In one part of the virtual ballpark, fans of the home team can be discussing the state of the pitch or the decisions of the coach. In other parts of the ballpark, fans from opposing
teams can get together to argue the merits of different players. “This is by-appointment chat,” explains Choti. “The ballpark opens when the game begins and closes when the game ends. An automated session manager feature manages the chat rooms and ushers users out at the end of a game, just as they would be ushered out of a real ballpark.”

As part of the project, ProcessOne developed a customised module for MLB.com to allow its ejabberd-based instant messaging server to interact with the company’s existing web services and authenticate users against its user database. “Users can now log in once to MLB.com and use a range of different services, including the chat facility, without having to log in again to a separate system,” explains Gough.

The entire instant messaging solution, including the customised module, was deployed in a very short timeframe. “ProcessOne took us from conception to deployment in just three weeks,” recalls Choti.

Meeting requirements by 110%

MLB.com is delighted with its new chat service. Over the course of each season, it now facilitates different instant messaging sessions at as many as 25,000 venues. This Game Day chat facility is helping to attract more users to the site and is encouraging visitors to stay on the site longer. This gives the company more opportunities to cross-sell and up-sell from its range of merchandise and services. In addition, MLB.com anticipates that the chat service will also help it to attract higher value advertisers to its site.

The feedback from users has been very positive. “Users absolutely love it,” says Choti. “We believe that we now offer one of the most exciting chat facilities available today.”

The ProcessOne Instant Messaging Server is performing very strongly. “The use of Erlang and clustering in the solution architecture not only ensures scalability, but also adds to the solution’s stability and flexibility,” says Gough. “The ProcessOne Instant Messaging Server offers a plethora of features and we have been able to easily extend it to meet our unique requirements.”

“The ProcessOne Instant Messaging Server has met our requirements 110 per cent,” adds Choti. “From the very first day that we brought the server online, we have not had a single problem with it. It’s a champ!”

Now that its Game Day chat facility is up and running, MLB.com doesn’t plan to stand still. Every year it tweaks and enhances its web site with new features. “We are very confident that the ProcessOne platform is scalable and robust enough to support us in whatever direction we go,” says Choti.

He concludes: “Our success has been based, not only on the technical solution provided by ProcessOne, but also on the personal support
provided by ProcessOne. ProcessOne is not a vendor; it’s a partner and that’s a very important distinction.”

Process-one News: ProcessOne provides a stable and flexible instant messaging platform for leading European ISP

Paris, France - October 3, 2007 - Portugal Telecom has deployed ProcessOne's Instant Messaging solution as their core Instant Messaging platform. This leading european Internet Service Provider (ISP) has established a strong relationship with ProcessOne and is totally satisfied with the scalability and robustness of their new Instant Messaging system.

Owned by Portugal Telecom, SAPO is the largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Portugal. The company had a large online messaging community, but its existing server was simply not stable enough to cope with demand.

"We had daily interruptions in service, which were costing us customers," explains Pedro Melo, technical consultant at SAPO. "We worked with the existing supplier for quite a long time to try to resolve these stability issues, but it just got to the point when we couldn't put up with the costs and problems any longer."

As an ISP, the company needed a stable server to support its instant messaging (IM) capability and a more flexible platform for delivering a wider range of customer services. In addition, it needed a server that could scale horizontally as its customer base grew.

SAPO was already aware of ProcessOne and so contacted the company for its advice. "We discovered that ProcessOne solutions were already successfully powering some very big and growing sites, and this gave us all the reassurance we wanted," says Melo. "We didn't need to look any further."

Migrating platforms quickly

ProcessOne specialises in developing high-performance messaging solutions based on the ejabberd server. A standard technology from the Internet Engineering Task Force, ejabberd is based on the widely accepted eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) and offers a highly robust messaging platform. ejabberd is also an open source technology and is thus a secure choice for SAPO.

ProcessOne helped SAPO to prepare the migration from its existing server and then customise the technology. It advised the company about integration with its existing internal infrastructure and provided tools for load testing. The migration was completed very quickly and without any significant issues.

"We were up and running in less than two months," explains Melo. "ProcessOne was extremely helpful. The team was interested in our business, provided us with good advice and support and always reacted quickly if we had any issues."

SAPO is confident that it made the right decision in selecting an ejabberd-based platform. "ejabberd is the enterprise-class, large-scale deployment king," says Melo. "It has been working very, very well."

Living in an open world

SAPO has a longstanding commitment to open source technologies, so ejabberd provides a good fit with the company's IT strategy. If it needs to, the company knows that it can look into the code itself, diagnose problems and suggest fixes or customisations. "SAPO has a strong open source culture," explains Celso Martinho, CTO of SAPO. "Using open source software enables us to be innovative, flexible and reactive in a global market where the absence of these qualities can seriously hurt your business."

Through their work together, ProcessOne has produced a number of ejabberd product extensions to meet SAPO's specific business requirements, and SAPO now plans to make these extensions openly available to other users of ejabberd. SAPO also plans to publish the code it developed for migrating from its previous solution to the ejabberd platform, and it believes that this, in particular, will be very useful to other companies.

But it is not just the ejabberd technology that is open. ProcessOne also has a very open relationship with its clients. "The company provides us with access to its internal development site, so that we can see exactly what it is doing and the status of all tasks," explains Delfim Machado, technical project leader at SAPO. "Both sides feel that nothing is hidden."

Delivering integrated services

Since going live with ejabberd, SAPO has been able to successfully use IM to enhance other services. For example, it has integrated its ejabberd server with its SMS network, so customers can now send messages to the mobile phones of friends and colleagues from their PCs using IM. Similarly, customers can elect to receive an IM message when a new comment is posted to their blog or when they receive an important email from a specific email address.

"We are really excited about all of the possibilities with ejabberd," says Melo. "The integration of IM with other services creates a really strong differentiator for us. In the future, we plan to integrate more and more services with IM."

In particular, SAPO plans to work with ProcessOne in the months ahead to extend the use of IM into the areas of multi-media and Voice over IP (VoIP). As new technology standards emerge, SAPO will also work with ProcessOne to integrate these into its ejabberd platform and services.

Martinho concludes: "ejabberd has proven to be a carrier-class solution. It has provided us with a robust and scalable platform that we can trust for our messaging projects. We have a strong relationship with ProcessOne and are very confident about the future."

Process-one News: ejabberd exceeds expectations at SIPPhone

Paris, april 26, 2007 - SIPPhone have been using ejabberd for over three years and it has performed beyond their expectations. ProcessOne Instant Messaging solution is the perfect match to add sophisticated chat features to web sites or VoIP solutions.

SIPPhone is a strong advocate of industry standards. Based in San Diego in the USA, the company provides a range of voice over IP (VoIP) services for consumers and businesses. It decided to introduce new instant messaging capabilities for its customers and realised that the use of industry-recognised protocols would be the key to its success.

“We believe that industry standards are the way forwards for this industry”, says Matthew Reilly Software Engineer at SIPPhone. “The compatibility of our solutions with other established systems helps us to compete very strongly with proprietary solutions from other vendors.”

SIPPhone wanted to establish a new instant messaging service that would be highly available and robust. To gain the trust of new users, its solution had to be both easy to use and reliable.

Meeting the brief precisely

The company carried out an extensive market review to find the most suitable instant messaging server with which to deliver its new service. Reliance on industry standards was, of course, a prime requirement. In addition, however, SIPPhone needed a server that could support large numbers of concurrent users per node, to limit hardware and administration costs. It also needed to be able to customise the server easily and integrate instant messaging capabilities seamlessly with its VoIP provision.

ejabberd met the brief precisely. Based on the widely accepted eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), standardised by the Internet Engineering Task Force, ejabberd is a high-performance instant messaging server. It is an open source solution, so SIPPhone was able to licence the technology free of charge. It is also highly robust and offers a large number of built-in features for improving the performance of instant messaging services.

ProcessOne specialises in developing high-performance messaging solutions based on the ejabberd server and provided SIPPhone with assistance to acquire the solution. SIPPhone had a strong team of software engineers who were able to customise the server and build a bespoke solution in-house. However, experts from ProcessOne were available throughout the project to provide the team with advice and support when required.

Delivering a robust and scalable service

Engineers at SIPPhone soon realised that ejabberd was a very effective toolbox. They quickly developed a highly robust messaging service in line with business expectations and integrated it easily into the company’s existing VoIP infrastructure. Throughout the project, the company experienced no segmentation faults or buffer overloads.

“Simply put, it works”, says Reilly.

It was very important for the messaging solution to support large numbers of users. ejabberd scales naturally to handle thousands of simultaneous users connected on a single ejabberd node, but also has an in-built clustering feature. Through the use of clustering, companies can make their solutions even more scalable and increase fault tolerance at the same time.

Maintaining high availability

SIPPhone launched its new messaging capability as a feature of Gizmo Project, a free-to-use VoIP service for consumers and businesses. Now, users of Gizmo Project can exchange messages instantly with friends, family and colleagues. Due to the use of industry standards and gateways, the service allows users to ‘chat’ with users of compatible systems too, such as Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live, Google Talk and other Jabber-based systems.

Since going live, the solution has been very reliable. ejabberd allows engineers to perform updates on code without loosing the connection or needing to restart the server. As a result, SIPPhone is able to troubleshoot the system and perform maintenance, while keeping users connected and chatting. “This is a very important benefit, as it allows us to maintain a high level of availability for our customers”, says Reilly.

He concludes: “We have now been using ejabberd for over three years and it has performed beyond our expectations.”
